The solenoid is kicking out. It has to in order to complete the circuit that makes the motor spin. It's the one-way sprag in the drive that's not ...But that might not be your only problem because I think if the start motor still worked your wires would have melted and smoked. So it could be the solenoid or the brushes in the motor and more. Retry your test but use jumper cables instead of those small wires. First is the replacement starter had a defect (overunning clutch slipping). Secondly your battery may be low on charge and hasn't the energy to kick the drive into the ring gear. Changed oil and plugs after it was towed for 3 hours off the water. New battery. I did notice the gear the starter mates with is able to free spin both ways if that matters. When it’s a dead cold start it usually engages and starts the engine no problem. But that might not be your only problem because I think if the start motor still worked your wires would have melted and smoked. So it could be the solenoid or the brushes in the motor and more. Retry your test but use jumper cables instead of those small wires. Just be careful not to cross your cable connections when you do it. The starter should spin /crank the engine. If it does, the problem is with the cables, connections or relay. If it doesn ' t, crank the engine, connect the black/negative jumper cable as a ground between the drivetrain and negative terminal of the battery. Not sure what aftermarket starter or bendix you got but a lot of them are crap.
